Build Your Own Website in 3 Days: A Working Intensive for Artists + Organizers

By CultureWorks Greater Philadelphia (other events)

3 Dates Through Jun 30, 2019

ABOUT ABOUT

You’ve been working on an amazing project for months. You have print material, you’ve written copy, you’ve mobilized volunteers, and you’ve held several events. Yet, you still don’t have a central location where interested parties can learn about your organization’s mission, upcoming events, merchandise, and news.

Your organization needs a website! This interactive workshop, led by CW member + website developer, Rana Fayez will help you design, build, and publish a basic website, which can serve as a foundation for you to build upon in the future.

Sure, you could use Wix or SquareSpace - or hire a designer or firm (if you have the funds) - but why go it alone, when you could learn from an expert and in collaboration with others? Plus, we’ll:

  • hold you accountable to creating this work; and
  • provide step-by-step instructions, exercises, tips, tools, and hands-on guidance each step of the way.

Throughout the course of this workshop, we’ll:

  • Set-up a domain name + hosting package for your website
  • Assess your website goals
  • Develop a creative concept for your website
  • Build an initial design for your site
  • Create foundational pages for your site
  • Create a blog for your site (to post news)
  • Learn how to develop + edit initial content for your site
  • Build out an editorial calendar to load content onto your website
  • Build a contact form, so you don’t have to field e-mails alone

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop occurs over the course of the following three dates/times:

  • TUESDAY, JUNE 25: 5-9PM
  • SATURDAY, JUNE 29: 10AM-6PM
  • SUNDAY, JUNE 30: 10AM-6PM

DO I NEED PRIOR EXPERIENCE?
Very minimal experience needed. If you can make a Facebook post, you can make a website. Also, this is not a tech bootcamp. No coding experience needed.

BUT WHAT IF I NEED EXTRA ASSISTANCE?
This class is capped at 10 people to ensure that every attendee can receive hands-on support when needed. Plus, we’ve built time into all of the workshop dates for folks to design + test, as well as navigate potential challenges.

IS THERE ANYTHING I HAVE TO DO PRIOR TO THE WORKSHOP?
You'll be asked to come to the workshop with a list of 6-8 websites you admire and would like to model yours after, making notes about exactly what you like about them.

DO I NEED TO ATTEND ALL THREE SESSIONS?
It's not ideal to miss any time during these sessions, yet if life demands otherwise, we understand. However, if you're not present for the entirety of the course, organizers can not guarantee the functionality of the website you're creating,

Likewise, if you're not actually interested in building a website but are only interested in learning about the process, you're more than welcome to not attend the whole workshop.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
$300 for CW Members. Sliding scale pricing, ranging from $350-500, for the public (please see below). In addition, there will small fees associated with initial setup ($10-$100, ranging on your personal choices + preferences).

The cost for these workshops will be on a sliding scale basis. We recognize that this kind of learning experience (especially where you walk away with a website) is often cost prohibitive for individuals, particularly people of color, low-income/low-asset individuals, and those from grassroots and small organizations. Please find a cost that works for you. If you can afford to pay at the high end of the scale, please do!

A NOTE ON ACCESSIBILITY
CultureWorks is committed to providing accessible programs, events, and services. Our space is wheelchair accessible with a gender-neutral, accessible bathroom. Please contact us via the email link below regarding additional accommodations - and we’ll do our best to assist.
